A different method for Hot and humid climates

Let’s start with something we all know - Florida’s climate is hot and humid!

Exactly opposite from the dry winters which dominate the northern climate. Buildings in Chicago, or New York or Des Moines struggle to keep in the heat and moisture during the long, cold, dry winters. Static electricity, flaky skin and cracking furniture all prove that it’s a constant struggle. Because of Florida's warm, humid climate we run our air conditioning more than heating units, and due to this we struggle with excess humidity.

So if the climates are so different, the building methods and design should reflect the differences in climate, right?

Guess again.

Vented attics are a northern design technique for removing excess moisture buildup in the living areas. In cold winters the humid air rises through the ceiling to be removed by the drier winter air in the attic.

This method prevents it from condensing on the roof deck and rotting the wood. It has worked for decades, so wouldn't it be good for southern climates too? Not really.

The difference is that Florida’s outside air contains 70-80% humidity on an average day. That’s far more than is desirable or healthy for our indoor environment. In fact, 95% of all homes built in Florida use the vented attic system. This system actually humidifies our attics, and brings with it pollution, mold and mildew, fungi, and allergens, right into our attic space.

Our only weapon of defense is to run our A/C equipment day and night to remove it.
